Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) recently hosted representatives from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources and Deloitte in a strategic meeting aimed at deepening cooperation on methane reduction, decarbonization, and emissions management in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive of NUPRC, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, reaffirmed the strong and enduring partnership between Nigeria and the United States. He noted that energy collaboration remains a critical area of focus in the bilateral relationship, which the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is keen to strengthen.
“The current administration is committed to enhancing Nigeria-U.S. ties, particularly in the energy sector, to achieve shared goals of sustainable development and climate action,” Engr. Komolafe stated.
He highlighted NUPRC’s ongoing initiatives to support decarbonization efforts, including the creation of the Energy Sustainability and Carbon Management Division. This division underscores the Commission’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy solutions.
Engr. Komolafe further outlined the Commission’s active collaboration with multilateral organizations, development partners, and U.S.-based entities such as the U.S. Department of Energy and the Net-Zero World Initiative. These partnerships, he said, are central to achieving mutual energy and climate objectives.
In line with its mandate, the NUPRC has also developed a dynamic regulatory framework to address gas flaring and emissions in Nigeria’s upstream sector. This includes the release of the 2022 Methane Management Guidelines and the 2023 Flaring and Venting Regulations, which provide a clear roadmap for reducing environmental impacts within the industry.
“These initiatives demonstrate our unwavering commitment to fostering a sustainable energy future while positioning Nigeria as a global leader in emissions reduction and decarbonization,” Engr. Komolafe concluded.
The meeting reinforced the shared resolve of both nations to collaborate on critical energy projects and advance climate solutions in alignment with global sustainability goals.
