UMUAHIA – Miss Joy Mamkwe, a Biochemistry graduate from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), has made a breakthrough in sustainable menstrual hygiene by developing reusable sanitary pads made from banana trunks.
In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, the Abia State-born innovator shared how her deep interest in research led her to explore ways of turning agricultural waste into useful products.
“Apart from being a Biochemist, I have a strong passion for research,” Mamkwe said. “Initially, I was focused on renewable energy. But during my final year in 2022, I came across the idea of repurposing banana trunks, which are abundant in Abia State, into something useful—and that’s how this journey started.”
She explained that while Nigeria is one of the largest producers of bananas in West Africa, the trunks are often discarded as waste. Her research revealed that banana trunks could be processed into various products, including textiles, books, and notably, reusable sanitary pads.
“These pads are 100% locally made using raw materials sourced from banana trunks,” she said. “After harvesting the trunks, we extract the fiber, then thoroughly sterilize it—including UV-light treatment—to ensure it’s safe and hygienic for use.”
Mamkwe began working on the project during her final year and continued refining it through her NYSC service, which she completed in 2024. She has since started small-scale production from within the university premises.
When asked about regulatory approval, Mamkwe revealed that she is already in talks with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). “They’ve given me the guidelines, including the need for a standard five-room production facility. That’s currently my biggest hurdle.”
Mamkwe estimates that setting up such a facility would cost several million naira. However, with N1.5 million, she could rent a space and purchase additional equipment to scale up production.
Despite the challenges, her product is gaining traction. Some organizations have begun placing orders, especially for distribution to students and underprivileged communities.
“We’re focused on making affordable, sustainable pads accessible to low-income earners—students, rural girls, and women who can’t afford conventional sanitary pads,” she said. “While some investors have shown interest, I’m cautious about giving up control of the business. One investor wanted to become a co-founder, but my mentor advised me against it.”
Currently operating from within the university campus, Mamkwe is actively seeking funds to expand and establish a formal production space.
Her innovative product has already attracted institutional support. The Centre for Gender, Youth, and Child Development at MOUAU, led by Professor Mabel Onwuka, praised the initiative and revealed that the university’s women’s association had purchased the pads for distribution during International Women’s Day celebrations.
“Miss Mamkwe’s innovation addresses a real need,” Professor Onwuka said. “It reduces financial strain on girls and contributes to menstrual health awareness. We will continue to support innovative female students like her.”
The Abia State Commissioner for Small and Medium Enterprises, Mr. Mike Akpara, also expressed enthusiasm about the project. He invited Mamkwe to present her innovation formally to the Ministry.
“She should write to us and come in for a demonstration,” Akpara said. “Once we’re convinced, we’ll escalate it to the Governor. The current administration is committed to supporting young, enterprising Abians.”
Looking ahead, Mamkwe is considering a master’s degree in Public Health to deepen her expertise in women’s health. “This project has reshaped my career path,” she said. “I want to make a real difference in the lives of women and girls across Nigeria.”
