The funding, channeled through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), was announced in a statement released by the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Abdullahi Yahaya Bello. The grant approval was officially conveyed in a letter dated June 19, 2025, and signed by the TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono.

According to the Vice-Chancellor of FUD, Professor Abdulkarim Sabo Mohammed, the university is among a select group of institutions chosen to benefit from the strategic initiative aimed at driving innovation and self-reliance in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

“This project is designed to empower students, encourage entrepreneurship, and position graduates not just as job seekers but as job creators in their respective disciplines,” Prof. Sabo said.

The proposed innovation hubs and technology parks will feature 14 distinct components designed to nurture creativity and practical skills in a wide range of fields. These include:

  4. Leathercraft Workshop: A space for exploring the art of leatherwork, from traditional craftsmanship to modern applications.
  5. Biotechnology Lab: A cutting-edge environment for research in biological sciences and advanced biotech techniques.
  6. Embedded Systems & Coding Lab: Designed for programmers and engineers, the lab will feature tools for hands-on learning in coding and system integration.
  7. Electronics Lab: Focused on the development of prototypes and electronic systems with expert support.
  8. Textile and Fashion Design Studio: A collaborative workshop for designers and artists to explore both traditional and digital fashion design methods.
  9. Upcycling and Recycling Workshop: A creative space for transforming waste materials into functional items, artworks, and furniture.
  10. Eco Lab: Focused on sustainable innovation, including circular economy practices, green architecture, and environmental technology.
  11. Refrigeration and Air-conditioning (RAC) Lab: Equipped with simulators and training modules for innovation in cooling technologies.
  12. Metal Workshop: A fabrication center for metal-based design and functional engineering.
  13. Wood Workshop: A fully equipped space for woodworking, furniture design, and architectural craftsmanship.
  14. Sustainable Energy Lab: Designed to foster innovation in renewable energy and green technology using modern demonstrators and simulation tools.
  15. Showrooms: Dedicated spaces for displaying products and prototypes developed across the various hubs.

Prof. Sabo emphasized that the innovation hubs will not only benefit FUD students but also attract skilled professionals and innovators from across Nigeria, providing them with access to expert mentorship, high-end technology, and collaborative networking platforms.

“Once completed, the project will create an enabling environment for innovation and enterprise, bringing together brilliant minds to develop impactful solutions that drive economic growth and national development,” he said.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader strategy to promote innovation, reduce unemployment, and enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness in science, technology, and entrepreneurship.
