The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued new access guidelines for Nigerians using its self-service portal to modify their National Identification Number (NIN) records. The move is part of broader efforts to enhance data protection and improve user experience.

In a statement signed by Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of the Commission’s Corporate Communications Unit, NIMC emphasized that access to the NIN self-service modification portal is now strictly tied to the device and browser used during initial account registration.

Device and Browser Restrictions

NIMC clarified that each self-service account is uniquely linked to the exact browser and device used during its creation. Attempting to log in from a different browser or device could result in denial of access, as the system is designed to block unfamiliar configurations to prevent unauthorized use.

“Your self-service account is uniquely tied to the browser and device used during registration. Access to your account is therefore limited to that specific browser on that particular device,” the Commission explained.

Cache Clearing and Unlock Limits

Users are also advised not to clear their browser cache, as this could reset configurations and lead to account lockouts. Once locked, an account is allowed a maximum of five unlock requests. Exceeding this limit will require users to undergo a formal unlinking process to regain access.

“These are some of the security measures put in place to protect the identity and data of users,” NIMC stated.

Compliance and Service Improvement

The Commission urged all Nigerians using the portal to adhere strictly to the guidelines in order to avoid disruptions and ensure a smoother experience.

“Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as the Commission continues to safeguard your data and improve service delivery,” the statement concluded.

Background: Shift to Digital Services

The self-service modification portal is a key part of NIMC’s digital transformation strategy. In October 2023, the agency officially announced that all NIN data modification activities would be moved online, eliminating such services from physical enrolment centres.

“Modification activities will no longer be conducted in our enrolment centers. Instead, we have launched a convenient self-service modification portal, empowering you to update your information securely and efficiently online,” the Commission had previously stated.

The digital portal offers users a convenient way to update their personal data—such as name, date of birth, and address—at any time and from any location, provided they follow the new access guidelines.
