ABUJA – The Nigerian media industry was thrown into mourning on Monday following the tragic death of ARISE News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.

ABUJA – The Nigerian media industry was thrown into mourning on Monday following the tragic death of ARISE News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.

The 29-year-old broadcaster, popularly known as Sommie, reportedly died in the early hours of Monday, September 29, after sustaining fatal injuries in the attack.

ARISE News Confirms Death

In a statement released on its official X handle, ARISE News described Sommie as “a cherished colleague and a vibrant voice” who had earned the trust of viewers nationwide as a news anchor, reporter, and producer.

“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.

The network further highlighted her background as a lawyer and praised her professionalism, dedication, and camaraderie within the newsroom.

Tributes Across Professions

Tributes have since poured in from journalists, civil society organizations, members of the legal community, and viewers who admired her work. Many expressed shock over the killing and called on security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Call for Justice

ARISE News urged authorities to act swiftly in apprehending the suspects behind the attack.
“We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the station declared, while extending condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones.

Legacy

Maduagwu’s untimely death marks a painful loss for Nigeria’s media landscape. Her voice may be silent, but colleagues and admirers say her passion and legacy will endure.
