TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by its National Secretary, Comrade Shedrack Anzaku.

According to Echono, the initiative is aimed at easing mobility challenges faced by students nationwide and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to enhance student welfare through innovative and sustainable solutions.

He explained that the shuttles will be managed by students to ensure accountability and sustainability, while charging stations will be installed on each participating campus. The rides will also be offered at minimal cost to make them affordable for all students.

“Students currently face many risks and spend so much time moving around campuses, especially those who live off-campus. From next month, we will be launching electric student shuttle services in selected institutions,” Echono said.

He added that the transport project is part of a broader effort to improve accommodation, power supply, and learning infrastructure in tertiary institutions across the country.

Echono revealed that TETFund is intensifying investments in student hostels across 72 institutions, with several projects scheduled for commissioning from December. He also noted that the Fund is expanding its support for research laboratories, digital learning systems, and renewable energy projects to boost educational quality and global competitiveness.

He emphasized that the new initiatives are in line with the administration’s goal of ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to quality education, complemented by programmes such as the National Student Loan Scheme, now managed by the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFund).

In his remarks, NANS National Secretary, Comrade Anzaku, commended TETFund for its transformative impact on campuses nationwide, noting that most modern facilities in Nigerian tertiary institutions exist due to its interventions.

Meanwhile, experts have called for a balanced transition to electric mobility. Automotive analyst Richard Akpodiete told Nairametrics that Nigeria should adopt hybrid vehicles as a transitional option before full electric integration, citing Germany’s approach that combined incentives, infrastructure, and flexible energy systems.

Earlier in August 2025, TETFund received a record ₦1.6 trillion allocation for projects across tertiary institutions — the highest in its history. Of this, ₦70 billion was earmarked for energy initiatives, including solar and gas-powered systems, while ₦25 billion was allocated to campus security infrastructure such as street lighting.
