Speaking through the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, the President made this known during the official transfer of the Akure Complex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) to the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH).

The Akure complex, formerly one of three facilities under UNIMEDTH, will now operate fully as a federal teaching hospital, while the two remaining complexes at the Medical Village, Laje Road, and Hospital Road in Ondo City will continue under UNIMEDTH.

President Tinubu said the establishment of FUTATH reflects his administration’s broader goal of transforming healthcare delivery in partnership with state governments.

“I want to thank the governor and his team for the collaboration that brought us this far. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to changing the health and social landscape of this country with focus, boldness, and determination,” Prof. Pate stated.

He assured health workers transitioning to the new federal facility of the government’s full support and urged them to remain dedicated to improving the wellbeing of Nigerians.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, said the decision to cede the facility to the Federal Government was part of a deliberate plan to strengthen medical education, research, and service delivery.

“The handover will unlock greater opportunities for funding, equipment, personnel, and inclusion in national and international research networks,” the governor said. “We are confident this hospital will become a world-class centre of medical excellence and transform healthcare delivery in Ondo State and beyond.”

The Chief Medical Director of FUTATH, Prof. Olusegun Ojo, noted that the hospital would prioritise advanced diagnostics, specialist care, and medical research. He added that the facility would help reduce the financial and emotional strain caused by medical tourism and improve access to quality healthcare for Nigerians.

Prof. Pate also acknowledged the roles played by Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti and the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, in supporting the establishment of the new hospital.

The new FUTA Teaching Hospital is expected to serve as a major centre for medical innovation, capacity building, and patient care in Nigeria’s South-West region.
