According to figures released by the Ministry of Health, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration allocated over 15 per cent of its annual budget to the health sector in both 2024 and 2025 — the highest in the state’s history.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, described the milestone as a demonstration of the government’s strong commitment to universal health coverage and the welfare of residents.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, the commissioner said the increased allocation was already yielding tangible results in infrastructure upgrades, recruitment of medical personnel, and the provision of modern healthcare equipment across public hospitals.

“This historic achievement reflects our determination to ensure that every resident of Kano State has access to quality healthcare services,” Yusuf stated.

The Abuja Declaration, adopted by African Heads of State in 2001, recommended that member nations dedicate at least 15 per cent of their national budgets to healthcare. Kano’s performance now places it among a handful of subnational governments in Africa that have met or exceeded the standard.

Dr. Yusuf added that the funding has accelerated the implementation of the Kano State Health Strategic Development Plan, focusing on accountability, sustainability, and efficiency in healthcare delivery.

He also noted that the government is collaborating with development partners and community-based organisations to sustain reforms and ensure that public spending translates into measurable health outcomes.

Governor Yusuf’s administration has, in recent months, undertaken extensive renovation of general hospitals, deployed modern medical equipment, and approved the hiring of additional healthcare workers to address manpower shortages.

The ministry reaffirmed its resolve to consolidate ongoing achievements through continuous collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen the state’s health system and enhance public well-being.
