The initiative follows several months of heightened criminal activities between late 2023 and early 2024, particularly in Abaji, Kwali, and Bwari, where frequent kidnappings and attacks by bandits were reported.
Wike said the move was part of his commitment to decentralize policing in the FCT and ensure faster response to crime. He directed the immediate construction of two additional divisional police stations in each of the six area councils.
During an inspection visit on Thursday, the minister observed progress at several construction sites, including Tukashare and Saburi in AMAC, Bako in Kwali, Yaba in Abaji, Giri in Gwagwalada, and Ushafa in Bwari.
At Saburi, the main police station and officers’ quarters are almost complete. The facility features an administrative building with offices for the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), supporting staff, and holding cells equipped with toilets and bathrooms. The residential block includes six two-bedroom flats, each fitted with kitchens and dining areas.
Project Engineer Ahmed Yahaya said electrical and plumbing work had been completed and that finishing touches and painting were underway.
In Yaba, near the border with Niger State, Site Engineer Ayinde Adewale confirmed that construction would be completed before the November deadline, citing adequate funding from the FCT Administration.
He noted that Yaba’s location — connecting Niger and Kogi States — made it a strategic point for combating cross-border criminal activity.
Residents have welcomed the initiative. Farmer Musa Yakubu from Yaba said the new police presence would encourage business and trade, while another resident, Ibrahim Danladi, said people now feel safer and more confident to move around freely.
Officials said the new police divisions follow a national prototype design approved by the Inspector-General of Police to promote uniformity, comfort, and functionality. The FCT Director of Security Services added that the facilities meet national standards to improve working conditions for officers and enhance community policing.
