Kabba, Kogi State – Over 500 houses have been submerged in Kabba, the administrative center of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, following a devastating flood that wreaked havoc across the region. Property worth millions of naira was destroyed, leaving scores of families homeless.
The torrential rainfall, which lasted for three consecutive days, caused streams and brooks in the area to overflow their banks, inundating communities and inflicting severe damage. The Idde-Iyah community was reported to be the worst hit.
A traditional ruler, Chief Obahunlewo, the Obaladugbo of Ekiri Quarter, was among those affected. His residence and belongings were washed away. The retired police officer, who is said to be undergoing medical treatment, was left devastated.
Lawal Abejide, a local leader, confirmed the scale of the destruction:
“The flood affected over 500 households, places of worship, and claimed the lives of more than 1,500 domestic animals. The Source of Life Mountain of Redemption Church (Abosede) and all the mosques in the area were completely submerged.”
Ondo State Also Hit Hard
In Ondo State, a similar flood disaster displaced hundreds of residents following continuous downpour across the three senatorial districts. Seven bridges reportedly collapsed, cutting off communities from essential access to farms, markets, and workplaces.
Worst-hit areas include Owo, Ilaje, and Okitipupa Local Government Areas. Communities such as Ayeka, Ikoya, Igbodigo, Igodan, Igbotako, and Ilutuntun in Okitipupa LGA, as well as Igbokoda, Ilare, Omonira, Ugbo, and Mahin in Ilaje LGA, suffered extensive damage.
In Ese-Odo LGA, residents of Igbotu, Ilu-Agbo, Kiribo, Igbekebo, Inikorogha, and Sabomi were forced from their homes.
A resident in Okitipupa, recounting the ordeal, said:
“The flooding was caused by erosion from Igodan and the overflowing of the Igodan stream near the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology. About 10 buildings were affected. We fled with our families to safer areas, but we lost valuables—electronics, clothing, bedding, furniture, and kitchen items.”
While residents noted that a canal in the area was dredged earlier this year, they blamed accumulated debris for the blockage that worsened the flooding.
Authorities in both states are yet to provide official response plans as displaced families continue to seek refuge. Humanitarian assistance is expected in the coming days.
