A Shocking Loss for World FootballClub Leadership Speaks on the TributeA Legacy Beyond the PitchA Powerful Statement of Respect

In an unprecedented move, Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the iconic No. 20 jersey worn by Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, following his tragic death in a car accident.

The announcement was made late Friday night through the club’s official channels. According to the statement, the jersey number will no longer be assigned to any player — across the men’s, women’s, or academy teams — in honour of Jota’s memory.

A Shocking Loss for World Football

Jota, aged 27, died in a fatal car crash in Spain alongside his brother, Andre Jota. Their deaths have sent shockwaves across the global football community, prompting tributes from fans, clubs, and teammates.

Since joining Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, Jota had become a household name for the Anfield faithful. Renowned for his sharp instincts in front of goal and relentless work rate, he played a key role in Liverpool’s domestic and European successes, including the Premier League title.

Club Leadership Speaks on the Tribute

Michael Edwards, CEO of Football at Fenway Sports Group (FSG), emphasized the emotional significance behind the club’s decision.

“It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision,” Edwards said.
“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten.”

He described the act as a “unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person,” adding that it is the first time in Liverpool’s 132-year history that a squad number has been retired.

A Legacy Beyond the Pitch

Jota’s impact transcended statistics. His humility off the pitch and determination on it earned him admiration not only in England but across the footballing world. Social media has been flooded with heartfelt tributes, videos of his memorable goals, and messages from supporters sharing how the player inspired them.

A Powerful Statement of Respect

For many observers, Liverpool’s tribute sends a strong message about the value of humanity and respect in sports — placing character and memory above competition.

As tributes continue to pour in, the retired No. 20 jersey stands as a permanent symbol of Jota’s legacy.

Rest in peace, Diogo Jota. The Anfield faithful — and the world of football — will never forget you.
