Former Kogi governorship candidate and ex-senator, Dino Melaye, has alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been compromised by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), rendering it ineffective as an opposition party. Melaye made the claims during an interview on Friday, following his recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Melaye accused the APC of orchestrating the collapse of the PDP, stating that the once-dominant opposition party now operates under the influence of the ruling party.
“PDP has been purchased by APC. PDP is a parastatal of the APC. PDP is a department of the APC. In fact, they take dates for NEC and NWC meetings from the Villa,” Melaye said.
He further criticized the PDP governors, questioning their commitment to opposition roles. “Just look at the number of governors in the PDP today. Are these governors acting like opposition governors? Are they playing opposition roles? Those who are remaining in the PDP are holding fort for the APC.”
Melaye also revealed that his decision to leave the PDP was driven by the party’s inability to effectively challenge the APC. Citing a recent comment by Babangida Aliyu, a PDP chieftain, Melaye claimed the party lacks the resolve to oppose the current administration.
“With due respect to my uncle, Babangida Aliyu, you heard him two days ago. He said, ‘If we can tolerate Buhari for eight years, then we should tolerate Tinubu for another four years.’ Is that the voice of an opposition person?” Melaye asked.
Melaye concluded by warning that the political climate remains fragile, stating, “We live in precarious times.”
His defection to the ADC marks a significant step in his political journey as he seeks to align with a party he believes can provide a stronger opposition to the ruling APC.
