NNPC: Ojulari Calls on Africa to Forge Its Own Path in Global Energy Transition

Ojulari made this assertion while delivering a keynote address virtually at the opening session of the 2025 Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE), held in Lagos. Themed “Building a Sustainable Energy Future: Leveraging Technology, Supply Chain, Human Resources, and Policy,” the conference brought together stakeholders across the energy spectrum.

He emphasized that Africa’s energy transition must reflect the continent’s unique context, urging stakeholders to embrace technological innovation, regional collaboration, and human capital investment.

“The future of energy is neither linear nor pre-determined; it is shaped by the decisions we make, our strategic investments, and how boldly we embrace innovation,” Ojulari said.

According to him, the global push for energy transition should not be imposed on African nations but approached through a framework of energy justice, where access, equity, and sustainability are prioritized.

“Many of our people are yet to attain basic energy access. Our people need energy, and our approach must be balanced and anchored on energy justice. Energy transition must be contextualised, just, and negotiated,” he added.

Ojulari advocated for cross-border alliances and transparent dialogues involving governments, industry leaders, financial institutions, civil society, and the youth to shape Africa’s energy future.

Highlighting the need for inclusive solutions, he described innovation as a strategic enabler — not just a buzzword — essential for achieving net-zero emissions without compromising industrial and residential energy demands.

“We are at a critical inflection point, where energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic development must be reconciled,” he said.

To accelerate progress, Ojulari emphasized the importance of de-risking investment environments by improving governance, streamlining regulations, honoring contracts, and maintaining a transparent fiscal system.

He also called for the adoption of blended finance tools, climate-resilient funds, and strategic long-term investments.

“This is a call for joint stewardship — where government and industry players co-create credible, attractive, and future-focused investment environments,” he concluded.
