The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) is on the brink of a historic milestone, with its total market capitalization approaching the ₦100 trillion mark. This remarkable surge is largely fueled by strong investor sentiment and significant gains recorded across 35 key stocks, spanning banking, telecoms, industrial goods, oil and gas, and fintech sectors.

The latest bullish trend is reshaping Nigeria’s capital market narrative, signaling increased investor confidence amid a gradually stabilizing macroeconomic environment.

Market Overview

As of Tuesday’s close of trading, the NGX’s market capitalization stood at approximately ₦99.65 trillion, narrowing the gap to the coveted ₦100 trillion benchmark. The All-Share Index (ASI) also advanced by over 1.8%, reaching a new record of 164,903.56 points.

Market analysts attribute the rally to renewed interest from institutional investors, robust half-year corporate earnings reports, and increased participation from foreign portfolio investors seeking returns in emerging markets.

Top Performing Stocks

The rally was significantly driven by gains in heavyweight stocks such as:

  1. MTN Nigeria – up by 9.5%, buoyed by its strong Q2 earnings and growing mobile money adoption.
  2. BUA Cement – gained 8.3%, following improved profit margins and expansion announcements.
  3. Zenith Bank and GTCO – both recorded significant gains of over 6% on the back of robust dividend guidance.
  4. Seplat Energy – rose by 7.1%, benefiting from stable oil prices and positive production updates.
  5. Transcorp Power and Fidelity Bank also posted double-digit gains, supported by investor speculation around strategic acquisitions and capital expansion.

Sector-Wide Strength

The rally is not isolated to a single sector. According to data from NGX’s sectoral indices:

  1. The NGX Banking Index rose by 4.5%,
  2. The NGX Industrial Goods Index jumped by 3.8%, and
  3. The NGX Oil & Gas Index appreciated by 3.2%.
  4. The NGX Tech Index saw a 5.1% increase, largely due to gains in fintech-linked stocks.

This cross-sectoral performance reflects a broad-based rally, rather than one dependent on short-term speculation.

Market Drivers

1. Improved Earnings Season

Companies have begun releasing their Q2 and half-year results, many of which exceeded analysts’ expectations. Dividend declarations, revenue growth, and solid profit margins have encouraged further investment in blue-chip stocks.

2. Policy Reforms and Economic Stability

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s continued tightening of monetary policy, coupled with FX reforms and clearer fiscal direction, has helped stabilize the naira and restore investor confidence.

3. Foreign Investor Re-entry

With global interest rates stabilizing and Nigeria’s risk premium decreasing, foreign portfolio investors are re-entering the Nigerian equities market, seeking undervalued assets and high-yield opportunities.

4. Technology and Retail Participation

Increased adoption of digital trading platforms and financial literacy campaigns have drawn in a new generation of retail investors, adding depth and liquidity to the market.

What Analysts Are Saying

Capital market analyst, Ayotunde Adesanya, described the rally as “a vote of confidence in the Nigerian economy,” but cautioned investors to “remain vigilant amid global volatility and local policy uncertainty.”

He added: “If the momentum continues and macroeconomic reforms hold, surpassing the ₦100 trillion mark could attract even more international capital inflows.”

Outlook

Market watchers are optimistic that the NGX will not only cross the ₦100 trillion threshold but could maintain the rally into Q4 2025, especially if oil prices remain stable, and listed firms continue to deliver strong fundamentals.

With Nigeria’s capital market becoming more integrated into global financial systems and investor confidence on the rise, the NGX may be entering a transformative era of sustained growth and deeper market participation.

Conclusion

The Nigerian Exchange’s march toward a ₦100 trillion market capitalization is a symbolic and practical win for Africa’s largest economy. As stock prices rise and investor sentiment strengthens, the market stands as a testament to the resilience and potential of Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.
