announcement came on Monday during the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign in Abuja, themed “Tech Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.” The campaign aims to curb road crashes during the festive period, typically between December 15 and January 15.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the new system would eliminate the need for temporary licences and drastically reduce delays in the processing and issuance of permanent ones.
“We have upgraded our printing facility to produce about 15,000 licences daily, and we plan to increase this capacity to clear the backlog before the second week of November 2025,” Mohammed said.
He explained that the new contactless biometric capture technology will allow drivers to complete their licence registration and receive their licences immediately.
“It’s no longer about placing your hands on the scanner. The process is now contactless, seamless, and instant. Once captured, your licence is printed on the spot,” he added.
The Corps Marshal revealed that the system integrates data from the National Identification Number (NIN) database and links with driving schools, Vehicle Inspection Offices (VIO), and other agencies to ensure consistency and transparency.
He also noted that the new approach aligns with global standards and will serve as a one-stop digital solution for driver’s licence processing in Nigeria.
Deputy Corps Marshal Aliyu Datsama, who oversees Motor Vehicle Administration, disclosed that the FRSC has reduced a backlog of 800,000 unprocessed licences to 400,000, with a target to clear all remaining cases in the coming weeks.
“We’re currently producing about 40,000 licences daily and working round the clock to clear pending applications,” Datsama said.
He urged Nigerians who have completed their biometric capture to collect their licences, noting that over 206,000 unclaimed licences remain in FRSC offices nationwide.
