The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Aderemi Oseni (APC, Oyo), who raised concerns about the deteriorating state of infrastructure in Nigeria’s first-generation universities despite years of intervention by TETFund.
The House also directed the Federal Ministries of Education and Finance, the National Universities Commission (NUC), TETFund, and Development Partners to develop strategies to refurbish and restore the glory of Nigeria’s pioneering universities.
While leading debate on the motion, Oseni recalled that in the 1960s, institutions such as the University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, were global centres of academic excellence that attracted international students and scholars.
He lamented that years of neglect had led to decayed infrastructure, dilapidated lecture halls, empty zoos, and abandoned facilities, which have eroded the prestige these universities once commanded.
Oseni alleged that several TETFund intervention projects meant to bridge the infrastructure gap were poorly executed, noting that some newly completed projects were already deteriorating faster than buildings constructed over 60 years ago.
He stressed the need for the Federal Government to undertake a comprehensive review of TETFund-funded projects and refurbish first-generation universities to restore their lost glory.
The House adopted the motion and mandated its relevant committees on Education, Works, and Public Accounts to conduct an oversight investigation into the matter and report back with recommendations.
