A man with mental illness was killed by a group of people who accused him of kidnapping children using dark magic in Okene, located in the Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State.
According to PUNCH Metro, the mob paraded the victim in the Okengwe area before setting him on fire.
A source revealed that the residents tied the man’s hands and beat him before taking him to Okengwe where he was burned.
In response to the incident, the Chairman of Okene Local Government Area, Kogi State, Abdulrazaq Muhammad, has ordered the arrest of those responsible for the killing.
Muhammad stated in a press release on Tuesday that the perpetrators were criminals who had taken the law into their own hands.
He also instructed security agencies to investigate the matter, while inviting the district head of Okengwe, ward heads, and community leaders to give statements regarding their negligence in preventing the incident.
Initial investigations suggest that the information that led to the man’s murder was false. Further investigation will uncover the identities of those behind the vigilante justice, who will be arrested and face legal consequences. The chairman also cautioned the youth of Okene and the public against spreading fake news.
