Reps Approve Tinubu’s Emergency Rule in Rivers, Suspend Governor Fubara and Others
The House of Representatives has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, alongside the six-month suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and all elected assembly members.
The approval was given through a voice vote during plenary on Thursday, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. During deliberations on the President’s report, lawmakers were invited to contribute their perspectives.
Benue lawmaker and Deputy House Spokesman, Philip Agbese, proposed the establishment of a national mediation committee to facilitate peace talks between Governor Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, a recommendation the House accepted.
Additionally, the Minority Whip suggested that the six-month suspension of the governor and the legislature should remain flexible. He argued that if reconciliation is achieved between both parties, the emergency rule should be lifted before the six-month period elapses—a suggestion that was also approved.
Earlier, the Speaker read a letter from the President formally notifying the House of the state of emergency declaration.
