EFCC Denies Links Between Achimugu Investigation and Atiku, Sanwo-Olu
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied media reports suggesting that its investigation of Ms. Aisha Achimugu is connected to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement issued on Friday by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC emphasized that Achimugu’s investigation is solely related to alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
“We wish to state unequivocally that the investigations of Achimugu have no correlation of any kind with the two political actors. She is being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering and has since been declared wanted by the Commission,” the statement read.
The EFCC disclosed that its investigation into Achimugu began in 2022. During this period, Achimugu sought an injunction from the court to prevent her arrest, investigation, or detention. However, the Federal High Court in Abuja vacated the injunction on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
Quoting the court’s ruling, the EFCC stated:
“…no court has the power to stop the investigative powers of the Police or EFCC or any agency established under our laws to investigate crimes when there is reasonable suspicion of the commission of a crime or ample evidence of the commission of an offence by a suspect.”
The court also upheld an interim order for the forfeiture of assets suspected to be proceeds of crime and dismissed Achimugu’s suit as lacking merit.
“The foregoing clearly establishes that the EFCC’s case against her has no immediate or remote nexus with any politician or any veiled or open reference to any political engagement or transaction,” the statement added.
Reiterating its neutrality, the EFCC affirmed its commitment to professionalism and urged the public not to attribute any political motives to its operations.
