Obasa Set for Return as Lagos Assembly Speaker Amid Power Shift
Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is on the verge of reclaiming his position.
Sources confirm that Obasa’s security details have been reinstated, while those of his successor, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.
Meranda, who became the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly after Obasa’s removal, has not officially resigned. However, her tenure appears to have been decided over the weekend following intervention by key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Among those involved in brokering the resolution were former APC National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and several lawmakers.
During the meeting, Meranda was reportedly asked to step aside, paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement.
“Essentially, they declared Obasa’s impeachment illegal and directed lawmakers to reinstate him,” a source told Daily Trust.
The exact date for the Assembly to reconvene and formalize the leadership change remains uncertain.
Two weeks ago, Meranda indefinitely adjourned plenary after a chaotic session erupted when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the Assembly.
