Obasa Claims Meranda Resigned as Speaker During Peace Meeting
The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has asserted that the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, voluntarily stepped down from her position.
Obasa made this claim on Thursday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television program.
According to the embattled lawmaker, Meranda announced her resignation during a peace meeting held last weekend at the Lagos House in Marina.
He said, “When my security was withdrawn without my consent, did I complain? At the Marina meeting, attended by all party leaders, Meranda herself openly stated that she was stepping down. It was made clear to everyone present.”
Obasa further argued that when an official resigns, the associated privileges and security details are revoked.
“Now, when someone resigns, their official privileges are withdrawn. The question is, has she truly resigned? If so, let them produce the resignation letter. And if I were the one who resigned, would I still be here? I’m sure you would still refer to me as Speaker, even though we’ve never spoken before.”
He maintained that his removal by 36 out of the 40-member House was invalid, insisting that he remains the legitimate Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
“I have never been removed. I have no issue with being removed, but it must be done in accordance with the rules of the House and the Constitution,” he added.
