The decision followed a presentation by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who criticised the committees for not meeting expectations in addressing the country’s worsening insecurity.
The upper chamber also announced that new committees would be reconstituted within one week to strengthen legislative oversight.
In addition, the Senate directed chairmen of the committees on Army, Navy, Defence, Interior and Police Affairs to give a detailed security briefing during a closed-door session within one week.
The lawmakers said the briefing must justify why the committees should continue to exist amid rising security threats nationwide.
The Senate further launched a formal probe into the withdrawal of security personnel from the school in Kebbi State before the recent bandits’ attack. A joint investigative team comprising the committees on Army, Defence, Police Affairs, Interior and Special Duties was mandated to submit its findings within two weeks.
Lawmakers also demanded an investigative report into the killing of Brigadier General Uba within the same period.
Additionally, the Senate resolved that its leadership should urgently meet with President Bola Tinubu to present the outcomes of its deliberations on national security.
The chamber further agreed to engage the United States diplomatically as part of broader efforts to address the rising insecurity challenges affecting various parts of the country.
