The announcement was made during plenary by the Senate Selection Committee, chaired by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Under the new structure, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of Kebbi State has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence. Abdullahi previously chaired the Committee on National Planning.
The Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry also received new leadership, with Senator Shehu Buba of Bauchi State named Chairman. Buba was removed last week as Chairman of the National Security and Intelligence Committee.
In another adjustment, Senator Mustafa Musa from Yobe State has been appointed Chairman of the Committee on National Planning.
The Senate also made changes to the Committee on Air Force, naming Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu State, as Acting Chairman. Ngwu previously served as deputy chairman before the former chairman, Senator Akwashiki, became indisposed.
Senate leaders said the reconstitution was necessary to enhance the effectiveness of oversight functions and ensure the legislature can respond more robustly to emerging security threats across the country.
