Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) facing terrorism-related charges.
Sowore, who is planning a protest march to the Presidential Villa on October 20, said the visit to Jonathan was part of a broader effort to secure Kanu’s unconditional release.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore revealed that Jonathan agreed on the need for urgent and fair resolution of the matter, describing it as “critical to national peace and healing.”
Sowore expressed gratitude to the former president for showing leadership and empathy, noting that Jonathan promised to engage President Bola Tinubu on the matter soon.
“With this, former President Jonathan joins a growing list of Nigerians who have demanded justice in Nnamdi Kanu’s case,” Sowore said.
He listed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and former Senator Shehu Sani among those supporting Kanu’s release.
Sowore further urged prominent leaders including Peter Obi, Governor Charles Soludo, Governor Alex Otti, Governor Peter Mbah, and Oby Ezekwesili, among others, to speak out for justice.
According to him, Kanu’s case reflects deep-seated issues of marginalisation that must be addressed to foster national unity.
Atiku Abubakar has already backed the planned demonstration, calling it “a legitimate defence of human rights and justice.”
