In a recent meeting in Calabar, Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State urged the National Assembly to leverage the ongoing review of the 1999 constitution to establish additional local government areas within the state. Represented by Deputy Governor Efiok Cobham, Imoke emphasized that increasing the number of local governments would promote fairness, equity, national unity, and grassroots development.
Imoke highlighted that, given Cross River’s extensive landmass, the current 18 local government areas are insufficient, especially when compared to smaller states possessing over 30 councils. He noted that the state has maintained a strong partnership with its councils, leading to significant development despite limited resources.
The governor also called upon the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to reassess and increase statutory allocations to the state, advocating for a more equitable distribution formula. He expressed concern over federal mandates, such as police funding, imposed on states without corresponding financial support, describing this practice as unwarranted and in need of correction.
Additionally, Imoke expressed dissatisfaction with the deteriorating condition of federal roads in Cross River, which hampers access to various tourist attractions. He appealed to lawmakers to collaborate with the state in urging relevant agencies to promptly address these infrastructural challenges.
In response, Emmanuel Adedeji, Chairman of the House Committee on State and Local Government Affairs, acknowledged the committee’s constitutional role in liaising with states to foster development and enhance administration at the state and local levels. He identified subpar governance at the local level as a significant threat to Nigeria’s democratic system and emphasized the need for practical solutions to overcome constitutional obstacles, aiming to improve living standards for the majority of citizens.
